What is ITIL?
A plain-English guide to the framework, ITIL 5, and the certification path.
Read moreCost, careers, demand and pay — an honest look at whether ITIL certification pays off in South Africa.
For most people in — or moving toward — IT service, support and operations roles, yes. ITIL is one of the most requested ITSM credentials in South African job ads, Foundation has no prerequisites, and it’s affordable next to the roles it supports. It’s less essential if you’re a senior specialist who’ll never touch service management.
“Worth it” depends on where you’re heading, so here’s the honest version — what you get, whether it moves your career, and who should think twice.
Beyond the certificate, you get a shared language that IT teams everywhere use. ITIL turns up in job descriptions, in how service desks are run, and in how organisations talk about incidents, changes and problems. Knowing it makes you immediately more useful on day one of an ITSM-related role — and the Foundation course includes the official exam, so you finish certified, not just trained.
ITIL is a common requirement in South African IT service roles, and those roles pay well. IT service management sits in a healthy band — IT services managers in South Africa earn an average of around R1,055,960 a year, rising from roughly R736,778 early in a career to over R1,224,000 at senior level (SalaryExpert). ITIL won’t hand you those salaries on its own, but it’s one of the clearest ways to qualify for — and get shortlisted for — the roles that pay them.
I won’t quote a made-up “ITIL adds X%” figure, because there isn’t a reliable South-Africa-specific one. What’s true is simpler: employers list ITIL as a requirement or strong preference for service roles, and a recognised certificate helps you clear that first filter.
Who might reasonably skip it? A deep technical specialist with no interest in service management may get more from a technical certification instead — though even then, ITIL’s common enough that many still add it.
Yes — at R11,995 with the exam included, ITIL Foundation is a small fraction of a single year’s pay in the roles it opens up, and there are no prerequisites to fund first. New to ITIL? Start with what is ITIL?.
